The BSc (Hons) Nursing (Adult) is awarded by BPP University. 

The course aims to produce excellent nurses, who are fit for practice and able to meet the key needs of all patient groups. Students will experience an integrated academic and professional training environment structured to enable you to gain the knowledge, understanding and skills to pursue and sustain a career in contemporary nursing practice.

During the initial stages of the course, you will be given more direction and assistance to help you move from being a learner who is dependent, to an autonomous, increasingly reflective and critical individual as your knowledge develops. 

There is an expectation that, as you progress with your studies, you will become independent and self-directed, taking increasing responsibility for your own learning and professional development.

Preparing you for practice

The BPP University PGDL is designed to help you make a smooth transition from being a non-law graduate into a career in law. We don't just give you an excellent qualification, we give you an insight into life in practice, so you enter the next stage of your training more informed, more prepared and more effective, and able to demonstrate a higher competency when applying for training contracts and pupillages.

Once you have successfully completed your PGDL exams, you have the opportunity to specialise or develop an understanding in alternative areas, take two extra modules and you could graduate with a Graduate LLB (Hons) awarded by BPP University.  The Graduate Diploma in Law is awarded by BPP University and is recognised as completion of the academic stage by the SRA and BSB.

When you have passed your PGDL, you're guaranteed a place on our LPC, the next step to becoming a solicitor. Or you can apply for our BTC, the next step to becoming a barrister. 

How the programme is taught

We assume you have no prior knowledge of law when you start your PGDL, so you get a full induction programme and a high level of support from day one. This includes outstanding learning materials and online resources. All study materials are included in the fee. All lectures and resources have online equivalents.

You'll be taught by our experienced legal professionals and academics with time split evenly between tutorials and lectures as well as regular consolidation sessions and a wealth of online resources. For full details view our Locations tab.

What you will experience in the classroom

BPP University's ethos is learning by doing. Classes are designed with an interactive focus, based on discussions, debates and resolving practical case studies. You will learn the academic knowledge, but as importantly you will learn how it's applied in practice, with a logical approach, presenting your arguments persuasively and in a structured manner.

You will study up to 21 hours a week consisting of live and online lectures and classes dependent on location and start date. Tutorials are taught in groups of around 18 students, giving you a high level of student/tutor contact time.

All our students also have a Personal Tutor and access to a Student Advisor, should you need any guidance or additional support outside of class time.

Independent research essay options

We offer a wide range of titles, and will always consider individual topics suggested by students. Current options include intellectual property, succession, company law, family law, housing law, medical law and public international law.

Study Options

Personalise your PGDL timetable

BPP gives you more control over the way you study with face-to-face, online distance learning, or a combination of both available. Classes are offered morning, afternoon, evening and weekends. Face-to-face PGDL classes are taught on two set days per week during the core teaching term, at the following centres, Birmingham, Bristol, Cambridge and Liverpool.

You can start in January or September. For full-time study, both options take nine months. Or if you choose part-time and start in January, you'll finish in 18 months – ready to start the LPC or BTC in September. If you start part-time in September the programme takes two academic years.

With the BPP PGDL, you're given access to an unrivalled range of additional modules, designed to get you ahead and give you the edge in interviews. Highlights include:

From the moment you accept your place until you secure your first legal position, you can use our careers service. With our one-to-one support, we aim to give you the edge when it comes to getting a training contract or pupillage. You'll have everything from access to our vacancies database to advice on filling out application forms, intensive interview coaching, employer research and networking opportunities with top firms.

Part-time PGDL

Our part-time programme is designed to fit around your other commitments such as work and family. BPP offers a variety of part-time modes:

  • Evenings: taught between 6.00pm and 9.00pm. Each module is taught by a one-hour tutorial per week. All our lectures are recorded and made available to students online for flexibility of study
  • Weekends: one Saturday every fortnight, consisting of tutorials. Lectures delivered online
  • Day: taught on one half-day per week from 9am - 1.30pm in year 1 and from 9am - 2.40pm in year 2. Lectures are delivered online
  • Distance learning: weekly online lectures and tutorials with optional face-to-face tuition.

Entry requirements

UCAS

  • 120 minimum tariff points required for this course

OR

A-Level

  • BBB or equivalent. A minimum of 2 A-Levels
  • BTEC Extended Diploma or OCR Level 3 Cambridge Technical
  • DDM. Health and Social Care or Science only will be considered
  • Access to HE Diploma
  • All Level 3 credits must be at Distinction level. Nursing, science or health-related pathway only will be considered (to include study of Physiology and Biology)
  • International Baccalaureate Diploma
  • 30 points, Higher Level grades minimum of 5, 5, 5

OR

Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education Examination (HKDSE)

  • 4444 or 44433 in ANY subjects

OR

GCSE

  • Five GCSEs at grade C or above which must include English, mathematics and a science. We do not accept Level 2 equivalent qualifications e.g. BTECs or Key Skills. For reformed GCSEs we accept a minimum of grade 4 in English language and mathematics

Other

We will also consider applicants who possess:

  • A recognised and equivalent vocational, industry or professional qualification (e.g. Nursing Higher Diploma or Associate Degree Year 1 or 2)
  • A recognised and equivalent qualification (examinations and experience) and apply following the Accredited Prior Learning procedure (APL), learners must have 12 months minimum, 18 months maximum APL

English language requirements

To study at BPP, it is important that you are able to communicate and engage in English effectively in an academic setting.
If English is not your first language, you will be required to provide proof of your ability – for reading, writing, listening and speaking in English.
We accept the following methods to fulfill the admissions English requirement onto the programme:

  • IELTS of 6.5 overall with a minimum of 6.0 in no more than 2 components OR
  • HKDSE English Level 4 OR
  • Providing evidence of instruction and assessment predominantly in English throughout education

BPP Internal English test is also available for fulfilling the admissions English requirement onto the programme.

Contact hours

Full-time students on the 36-month programme will typically receive 14 contact hours per week, and will need to devote around 35 hours a week to study.

Practice Learning Experiences 

The programme consists of six practice learning experiences ensuring that you to maximise your learning opportunities. Practice learning will facilitate the acquisition of skills required to achieve competence within the adult nursing field of practice.

The programme ensures that there is equal weighting for learning in practice and academic theory in accordance with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) guidelines. There are four mandatory practice learning modules, one in year one, two in year two and one in year three, equating to 50% of the credit each year.

BPP University will consider if any reasonable adjustments can be made regarding the placements of students if they are disabled, as stipulated by the Equality Act 2010, reasonable adjustment will be considered if a student has a physical or mental impairment that has a ‘substantial’ and ‘long-term’ negative effect on their ability to do normal daily activities.

How the course is taught

You will be taught by expert tutors who have practical experience in their respective fields, along with a passion to share knowledge to maximise your career potential.

Year one
Introduces you to the fundamental aspects of adult nursing and health care practice and assessment of adults with a diverse range of care needs as well as a full introduction to the mental health nursing field of practice.

Year two
Focuses on the importance of applying professional nursing practice, which includes planning and implementing nursing care in a diverse range of healthcare settings and the importance of applying research and evidence-based practice to underpin therapeutic nursing interventions.

Year three
Focuses on developing your independence and research skills in leadership and management, supporting the education of patients and other members of the health care team, in addition to evaluating and appraising complex nursing and health care situations.

Assessments and examinations

The programme features a variety of assessments including coursework, examinations, practical learning assessments and clinical simulations.
 
Coursework is in the form of essays, reports or case studies, while group or individual presentations may be required to assess other competencies.
 
Examinations will be both with written and electronic including assessment techniques which may include elements or multiple-choice questions and maybe unseen or part-seen, where assessment material is released in advance.
 
BPP University offers flexibility in how these assessments are undertaken, and the programmes will utilise online tools where available to deliver assessments. On occasion, some assessments may require attendance at a physical location.

Adult nursing as a career

The BPP University School of Nursing is committed to producing nursing students who are highly skilled, compassionate, caring professionals.

Adult Nurses will be articulate, flexible, decision makers able to promote health and well-being, prioritise effective care and implement evidence-based nursing practice. They will work collaboratively with the inter-professional team, service users and their families, respecting their rights, choices and wishes. 

Our aim is to produce nurses who will provide a first class patient care for all service users, in a wide range of healthcare settings.

Registering as a nurse in the UK 

*Once you have successfully completed the BSc (Hons) Nursing degree you can register as a qualified adult nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC). 

All nurses operating in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland must be approved to practice by the NMC and therefore must be listed on the NMC register. You will need to apply for recognition of your qualification with the NMC, which can be done online. Your application will then be reviewed by the NMC based on their assessment criteria prior to entry onto the register.  

*Entry to the NMC register is subject to examination results and completed hours of practice.

BPP University is required to review the occupational health of all students who wish to gain entry to the NMC register. BPP University will review student’s ability to practice nursing in accordance with Occupational clearance as stipulated by the Equalities Act 2010.
